Kathryn: You already know what I think. The "professional" way is the only way. There are enough non-thinkers out there doing shoddy work - getting in and getting out for the buck. Especially agree with #7, show your real personality. I was deciding between my glossy professional admission photo for my FB page, or just one of me as a normal dude with my Saints cap on. Went with the saints cap. Its important to be professional, but I want my kids to know that I am just a normal guy to. Send me a message, post on my blog, ask me whatever you want, etc.

In your "look out for new social media" you might want to include http://www.morethangrades.com. This site does something no other site does: it puts together the students with the colleges and then steps out of the way like a good match should. Morethangrades.com does not filter emails through an internal email system for the purposes of tracking and controling a student's interaction with a college. It lets colleges do what they do best: Tell students about their institutions.

This was a very interesting post, and I'm really relieved that you guys ate the cost of replacements and concentrated on the relationship. I'm not sure this is the only pro-relationship answer to the problem, but it fits here.

It drives me bananas when colleagues go the "letter of the law" route - only giving others what they "pay" for, as if it's solely a transaction, rather than something alive, weaving threads, day to day - in other words, really relating to one another. In the end commpanies shoot themselves in the collective foot (both inwardly and outwardly) when they are short-sighted about relationships.

There was a big difference between my years at a well-ranked private institution versus time at a not-so-highly ranked one, versus an average public school.

It's an interesting thing to get a snapshot of various institutions, their quirks and to figure these sorts of things out and well...that study confirms that.

We used to log into THEFACEBOOK.com and pick our school from the list of ten choices. There were no additional photos, and the wall was just a place to type whatever you wanted.
